Sanger Garden

Why do we garden at Sanger?

Having a school garden is an outdoor STEM classroom to help our kids learn in a fun and creative way.  School gardens, besides being beautiful, have been shown to benefit kids’ education, health, and well-being.

  1. Education: Real hands-on science about plant life cycles, beneficial insects, and the environment.  Language arts and math curriculum can come to life in the garden, and it can be an inspiration for artistic endeavors.
  2. Health: Planting, growing, and harvesting their own vegetables - letting kids see where their food comes from - has been shown to improve eating habits and nutrition.
  3. Well-being: A school garden can create a feeling of community and belonging.  Time outside provides physical activity and sensory-based learning.

Our Alex Sanger Garden was started in the spring of 2023 through the financial support of our PTA.  Huge strides forward were made in the 2025-2026 school year when we partnered with Grow Garden Grow, a local organization committed to growing “a healthier world-one school garden at a time.”

This expertise provides training for our teachers in how to make the most of the garden classroom and guides the volunteers building the garden.

The garden is getting additional updates in 2026 through our partnership with STEMscapes Collab.  New fun and interesting hands-on self-guided learning stations are being set up throughout the garden.

We welcome all parents and our Sanger neighbors to volunteer in the garden, as it takes a community to grow and sustain it.  We will have monthly workdays in the garden and would welcome your help at one, two, or all the workdays.  Or, sign up to help with watering.  Every bit helps and no experience necessary!
